You’re a TIS Not a Teacher

When was the last time your walked away from a discussion, only to think of The Perfect Comeback hours later? Recreate the scene for us, and use your winning line.

I have had a million, trillion moments where I have walked away from a conversation and moments later the prefect comeback popped in my head! Dang it! Why didn’t I say that? Then,  I spend the next few days replaying the conversation in my head. Inserting my perfect comeback into the replay. But yesterday, I couldn’t think of one conversation where this has happened. Not one!
But today, today provided the opportunity I needed to write. I didn’t reply with the perfect comeback. Oh, no. Unfortunately, I wasn’t that fast on my feet. Dang it ! Dang it! Dang it! But here is what happened:

Me: I really wish that I could be there today while you guys are using Twitter. I know it’s your first time, but don’t be nervous.

Teacher:  I think I can figure it out. But I’ve never tweeted before.

Me: We can do a little trial run while your kids are in spanish. I would love to be in your class at 1:oo, but I have an evaluator meeting for another teacher.

Teacher: What? That’s weird. Why are you evaluating her? She’s the ESOL teacher and you are a TIS.

Me: Well, it’s not biggie. All of her lessons are in English.

Teacher: Yeah, but you are the TIS. I don’t get the connection.

In case you missed it, I am the TIS– Technology Integration Specialist. Fancy title, huh? I coach teachers on ways that they can integrate technology into their curriculum. So when this teacher said,”Yeah, but you are the TIS. I don’t get the connection.”, this was my opportunity to say:  ” I am a certified elementary education teacher. I spent several years in the classroom. I continue to take classes, read blogs and books, and participate in professional learning communities. I am an educator. She’s an educator. THAT’S the connection.”

Do you think she will ever get the connection? What do you do when people put their foot in their mouth like this?

Prayer: Lord help me not be easily offended. Allow me to show my gifts without saying a word.
